Name Your Business

Name your business. Hopefully, you have already considered a good name for your company. If not, try to choose a short and unique name that will stand out in people’s memories and make it easy for them to remember, write down, or type out so they can visit your website.  Try to give it a broad-based name so that you don’t tie your company down from future expansion.  Instead of “Florida BizWercs” we would just say “BizWercs” to keep the name brief, to avoid being a premium domain name, and so that we can serve customers beyond Florida.  And instead of “BizStartups” we use “BizWercs” so that we can include anything we want to in respect to business operations, beyond just information about startups. We also use an odd spelling because “BizWorks” and “BizWerx” are already taken as domain names. And just so you know, we only mention Florida a few times herein because that’s where we were located when we started this and so we use Florida for some of our examples.

• Try to think of a one-word or a combination-word brand name for your business, like our name. Well known names like Walmart, Facebook, QuickBooks, and BestBuy use combination-word names very effectively.  I go to namecheap.com and try different domain names until I get a good name that’s available and cheap.  I normally use the selection of a good domain name to preempt my selection of the company name.  I try hard to get a dot com name because that is the strongest.  Next would be .net and .org.

• Next, you will need to search the name you want to use on your state’s Department of Corporations website to make sure the name is available before you settle on using any name. For Florida businesses, go to: sunbiz.org.  For other states, go to our “Links” page.  You can use your domain name plus the business structure type as your business name, and include the dot suffix or not.
