Register Your Business
Register your business. You may need to register the business with the state, county (parish), and city as required by your business’ location.
a. Register with the state department of corporations. As an example, in Florida you would register with sunbiz.org to operate a business within the state.
b. Register with the state or county (parish) department of taxation for sales taxes. Contact your state’s department of revenue as applicable. Sales taxes to be charged are based upon the location where delivery is made of the product or service (where services are taxed). Note: In Florida, services are not taxed. You may need to be registered in each area within which you will make deliveries of services and/or products. This differs if you are shipping your products via commercial shipping companies because ownership of the product then changes to be from the shipping point. c. Register with the county (parish) where your business is located for an occupational license if required. Contact your local county or parish government as applicable to determine the requirement.
d. Register with the city where your business is located for an occupational license. Contact your local city government as applicable to determine the requirement.
