That is, who will buy your product or service. Plus, you will have to decide how you will reach and supply them with your product(s) and/or service(s). That is the basis of your business!  So, we recommend you write your mission statement if you have not already done so. This may become a significant part of your business plan if you do one, but if for nobody else, we recommend you do this for yourself to help you maintain focus on what you intend to do and be as a business. You will put your business name in the mission statement when you tie that down. You will do so in steps 5 and 6 below.  You may also choose to complete step 14 early to have your logo on this document and others you will be completing with this plan. But for now, let’s get a mission statement written.

  • First, you need to understand what a mission statement is. A mission statement declares the purpose of an organization, states the personality of the company, who it will serve, a general description of the organization, its function, and its base objectives. You can find many examples on the internet.

  • A mission statement will explain what is your company’s product or service offering. You will want prospects to understand what your company does. So, explain your offering in clear terms.

  • Identify what are the company’s core values. Establish the corporate personality. This is what you and your employees should strive to live by. And that includes you as the owner!

A mission statement can be very short or fairly long, depending on how much you wish to cover. In any event, cover the ideas you wish to cover as concisely as you can. Here is a rather long example that contains a lot of good information:

“ABC Services, Inc. is in business to fulfill customer needs for fair cost and outstanding service in performing mitigation, cleanup, and restoration of building damages resulting from water, mold, fire and smoke, and from crime and trauma events, while providing sufficient financial return to satisfy our investors and promote our growth. In order to serve these purposes, we will stand by our motto of, “Let’s do it right!” along with providing the best customer service experience possible! We believe that to take care of our customers first will ensure our success. In this effort, we recognize that we must establish impeccable credibility through continuously and effectively identifying the needs of the marketplace, by developing and maintaining appropriate and highly effective industry contacts and relationships, by leading the industry in developing and providing the optimal market offerings, by effectively accomplishing all selling and operating support activities, and by consistently striving to provide unparalleled “Industry Best” customer satisfaction.”
